President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday declared a nationwide security emergency amid a surge in attacks, kidnappings, and deadly assaults across several states.
In a statement personally signed by him, the President ordered the armed forces and the police to begin immediate large-scale recruitment to strengthen national security. The police, he said, will enlist an additional 20,000 officers, raising the total number of new recruits to 50,000.
Tinubu also approved the use of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps as training centres and directed that officers withdrawn from VIP protection return for refresher training before redeployment to conflict-prone areas.

The President further instructed the Department of State Services (DSS) to deploy all trained forest guards and recruit additional personnel to clear out criminal hideouts. “There will be no more hiding places for agents of evil,” he said.
Tinubu commended security agencies for securing the release of abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi and worshippers kidnapped in Kwara and reassured families of victims still in captivity—particularly students taken in Niger State—that rescue efforts would not stop.
He also urged the National Assembly to begin reviewing laws to allow state police where necessary and advised states to avoid siting boarding schools in isolated locations without proper security.
Tinubu condoled families affected by recent attacks in Kebbi, Borno, Zamfara, Yobe, Niger, and Kwara and paid tribute to fallen soldiers, including Brigadier-General Musa Uba.
Calling for unity, he appealed to citizens to stay calm, remain vigilant, and support security agencies. “Those testing our resolve will meet a determined nation,” he said.
