The Super Eagles of Nigeria have boycotted their training session in Rabat, Morocco, ahead of Thursday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff clash against Gabon, following unresolved issues over unpaid allowances and bonuses.
The team was scheduled to train on Tuesday but refused to take to the pitch in protest against what they described as “long-standing financial neglect” by football authorities.
Veteran BBC journalist Oluwashina Okeleji confirmed the development, revealing that the entire squad (including technical and backroom staff) joined in the boycott.

In a brief joint statement reportedly issued by the players and officials, the team stated:
“The full squad, including officials, withheld from training today in Morocco due to unresolved issues with outstanding payments. The Super Eagles are awaiting a quick resolution to continue preparations for Thursday’s game with Gabon.”
The standoff comes just two days before Nigeria’s semifinal fixture in the World Cup Africa Playoff Tournament, scheduled to hold at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat.
A victory against Gabon would see the Super Eagles advance to the final playoff, where they are expected to face either Cameroon or DR Congo.
This latest protest adds to the growing tension surrounding the team’s preparations, as concerns mount over Nigeria’s readiness both on and off the field.
