Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has been released from police detention after spending two days in custody.

Sowore confirmed his release on Friday evening through a post on social media, thanking those who stood by him throughout the ordeal.

“The Nigeria Police Force has capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movement. I have been released from unjust, illegal and unwarranted detention,” he wrote. “It is nothing to celebrate, but thank you for not giving up! #RevolutionNow.”

The activist, known for his fierce criticism of government policies and his push for sweeping political and economic reforms under the #RevolutionNow campaign, has faced several arrests in the past over his activism.

His detention had drawn condemnation from human rights groups, political figures, and civil society organizations, who described it as an attack on free speech and civic freedoms. There were also protests and calls for his release.

In the video showing him on the streets of Lagos after leaving prison, Sowore expressed appreciation to prominent figures who intervened, including human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former presidential candidate Peter Obi, activist Deji Adeyanju, and others who publicly demanded his freedom.

Sowore has vowed to continue his advocacy, insisting that his detention will not deter him from speaking out against injustice in Nigeria.
