The Take It Back (TIB) Movement has vowed to launch a nationwide protest following the alleged detention of its convener and 2023 African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, by the Nigeria Police Force.
Sowore had visited the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday afternoon alongside supporters to honour a police invitation. He is being investigated by the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit for alleged forgery and inciting disturbance.
TIB’s National Coordinator, Juwon Sanyaolu, said that he learned the police obtained a court order to detain Sowore.
In a statement, Sanyaolu condemned what he described as “harassment, intimidation, and unlawful detention” of the activist, insisting the invitation was politically motivated. He also accused the police of denying Sowore access to the petition against him or revealing the petitioner’s identity.

Supporters had earlier staged a protest at the police headquarters, warning against Sowore’s detention. Videos from the demonstration have circulated widely on social media.
In a warning of further action, Sanyaolu stated, “We are putting all Nigerians, students, and workers on notice for a nationwide protest. We will occupy police commands across the country until Sowore is released.”
AAC’s National Publicity Secretary, Femi Adeyeye, echoed the call, urging Nigerians “to resist the unlawful use of state institutions to suppress dissent.”
Commenting on the situation, former Social Democratic Party presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo criticised the police, writing on X (formerly Twitter): “Law enforcement powers should not be used to silence critics. Nigeria lacks enough police officers to tackle rising insecurity, yet they have time to spar with Sowore. It’s misplaced priority.”
As of press time, Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi had not responded to requests for comment.
