BREAKING: Police Uncover ₦111m Cash from INEC Officials Linked to Alleged Wike Bribe to Rig Election

The Nigeria Police Force has displayed ₦111 million allegedly recovered from officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) accused of taking bribes to rig the December 10, 2016 Rivers State re-run election, reports SaharaReporters.

According to a police investigative panel, Governor Nyesom Wike allegedly released ₦360 million to about 23 INEC officials, with three said to have collected their share directly from him at the Rivers Government House.

This follows earlier leaked audio tapes, in which Wike was allegedly heard negotiating bribes with INEC staff to sway results in favor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In another tape, he was heard with then-Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose mocking the military, while boasting of disrupting the polls. Wike denied the recordings.

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, later ordered a forensic review of the audio tapes, with experts expected to be flown in for the analysis. Telecom firms were also contacted for Wike’s call data as part of the probe.

In connection with the alleged malpractice, six policemen attached to the governor were paraded for misconduct during the election. Authorities accused them of abusing firearms in violation of Force Order 237.

While the panel’s final report is still awaited, Wike has challenged the inquiry in court. His suit against the police is being resisted by the Force’s legal team, led by human rights lawyer Femi Falana.
