The Kaduna State Police Command has ordered the suspension of a planned rally by supporters of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, citing security threats and risks of public unrest.

The rally, intended to mark Obi’s 64th birthday, was reportedly targeted by criminal elements who, according to intelligence reports, planned to infiltrate the event and use it as a cover to incite violence and disrupt public peace.

In a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the police emphasized that political rallies and public gatherings of a political nature remain suspended across the state. The directive, they noted, is in effect until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially opens the window for political campaigns.

The statement also pointed out that the date chosen for the Obi rally clashes with INEC’s schedule for party primaries, which could lead to disruptions and potential clashes across various parts of the state. “Holding a political rally on the same day designated for primaries increases the likelihood of tension, overlapping activities, and breakdown of law and order,” the police said.

Organizers were urged to suspend the rally in the interest of public safety and to prevent the event from being hijacked by miscreants.

While acknowledging the right of citizens to gather and celebrate political leaders, the police reaffirmed that restrictions on political activities remain in force in Kaduna State.

The Command also warned that any individual or group found in violation of the directive would face legal consequences.

The Kaduna Police Command assured residents of its continued commitment to maintaining peace and protecting lives and property throughout the state.
