Detained IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has filed a N550 million lawsuit against the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and 10 doctors over what he claims is a falsified medical report presented in court.
The suit was revealed by one of his lawyers, Barrister Maxwell Opara, in a video he posted on Facebook on Friday. Opara said the medical report, which was never based on a proper examination, played a key role in the court’s decision to deny Kanu bail.

According to earlier statements by Kanu’s legal team, the court had ordered the NMA to conduct a full medical evaluation on Kanu. However, his Special Counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, said no such examination ever took place. Instead, the report submitted to the court was allegedly based on an “informal meeting” with Kanu at the DSS headquarters on September 18—days before the court issued the formal examination order.
Ejimakor described the report, dated October 13, as an “ambush,” claiming it left the defence no opportunity to properly respond. He argued that the document did not comply with the court’s directive issued on September 26 and reaffirmed on October 8.
Opara added that several letters sent to the NMA and the doctors demanding clarification were ignored, forcing the legal team to proceed with the lawsuit.
The case now adds another layer to the ongoing legal battle surrounding Kanu, who has remained in DSS custody since June 2021 on charges including terrorism and treasonable felony.
