BREAKING: Nnamdi Kanu Defends Himself as His Entire Legal Team Withdraw from the Case

A dramatic twist played out on Thursday at the Federal High Court in Abuja when the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, told the court he would be representing himself after his entire legal team withdrew from his trial.

Lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), informed the court that he and other Senior Advocates had stepped down from the case, explaining that Kanu had decided to “take back his case.”

Confirming the development, Kanu told the presiding judge, “I will be representing myself for now. That might change later.” When asked if he wanted the court to assign a lawyer to him, the IPOB leader declined.

Speaking on his own behalf, Kanu argued that the court lacked jurisdiction to continue with the case against him. His remarks came as part of an oral submission he made directly to the bench—a rare move for a defendant in such a high-profile trial.

The development adds a fresh layer of intrigue to the long-standing case, which has seen several delays and legal challenges since Kanu’s arrest and extradition to Nigeria in 2021. He faces charges bordering on treasonable felony and terrorism-related offences.

Observers say Kanu’s decision to defend himself could significantly alter the pace and tone of the proceedings in the coming weeks.
