A Nigerian-born home-birth advocate and midwife, Oyebola Coxon, has been charged with manslaughter in Australia following the death of a baby she helped deliver.
Coxon, 36, who promotes natural childbirth and discourages medical interventions, was called to assist a woman in labour at a home in Wallsend, New South Wales, last October.
According to reports, she allegedly ignored signs of complications and the mother’s repeated pleas to go to the hospital. The woman remained in labour for two days before finally being taken to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, where an emergency cesarean was performed. The baby boy died eight days later, while both mother and child had suffered serious medical complications.

Coxon, who has built a large following on Instagram under the handle Mamma Informata, has often urged women to resist doctors’ advice, questioning the need for ultrasounds and blood tests and even dismissing gestational diabetes as “non-existent.” She also sold paid online courses on childbirth and breastfeeding.
Following a police investigation, she was arrested in Wallsend on August 14 and charged with manslaughter and grievous bodily harm, the New South Wales Police confirmed.
She was granted bail after appearing in court under strict conditions, including a ban on practicing as a midwife or teaching about pregnancy and childbirth.
Her trial is scheduled to begin on October 15 at Newcastle Crown Court.
