A High Court sitting in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has sentenced a 27-year-old man, Ahmadu Yaro, to 21 years in prison for the rape of a three-month-old baby. The horrific incident, which occurred in Adogi community, Lafia Local Government Area, in May 2020, sparked nationwide outrage and calls for justice.
Delivering judgment on Monday, the Chief Judge of Nasarawa State, Justice Aisha Bashir-Aliyu, described Yaro’s act as “barbaric, demonic, and a direct attack on the moral conscience of society.” She sentenced him to 21 years imprisonment without the option of a fine, noting that the ruling should serve as a deterrent to others who may contemplate similar acts.
Yaro had been standing trial since June 2020, after being arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

It was revealed during the trial that he had previously been accused of a similar offense in the same community but was not prosecuted due to lack of formal complaint to security agencies.
The Senior Special Assistant on Protocol and Media to the Chief Judge, Enoch Ali Maku, confirmed that the sentence followed clear evidence proving Yaro’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt. He added that the convict has 30 days to appeal the judgment if he so wishes.
Nasarawa State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Isaac Danladi, who led the prosecution, applauded the court’s decision. He emphasized the state government’s commitment to eradicating gender-based violence and ensuring justice for survivors.
His appearance in court drew praise from legal observers, including Senior Advocate of Nigeria Mohammed Nda Yako, who hailed the verdict as a reflection of strong legal leadership.
