Local vigilantes in a Rivers State community have thwarted an armed invasion by suspected bandits, leaving several of the attackers dead during a confrontation in the early hours of the day.
The incident, which surfaced in a viral video on social media, occurred when the armed group reportedly entered an Ijaw settlement with the intent to raid. However, community youths and members of the local security outfit mobilised immediately and engaged the invaders.
Residents said the bandits were outmatched during the shootout, and many of them were killed before they could flee.

According to a community source, the quick reaction from the vigilantes prevented what could have been a devastating attack.
“Those boys acted fast. If they hadn’t responded immediately, things would have ended very differently,” the source said, adding that the incident has renewed conversations about strengthening community-based security networks.
Local leaders have since urged other communities across the region to organise functional vigilance teams, stressing that government security forces are often stretched thin and cannot be physically present in every locality.
As of the time of filing this report, the Rivers State Police Command has not issued an official statement on the incident.
