Human Rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore through the Inibehe Effiong Chambers, have petitioned the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) over what it describes as the “unlawful” extension of service for Ms. Ushite Rita Uguamaye, a corps member with state code number LA/24B/8325.
In the letter dated August 11, 2025, the firm alleges that Ms. Uguamaye’s service year was extended by two months on false claims that she failed to attend the April 2025 biometric clearance. They claim the Local Government Inspector (LGI), Ms. Veronica Abela, deliberately refused to clear her on April 7 despite her presence at the venue for over six hours.
According to the petition, the LGI later admitted “misplacing” Uguamaye’s written explanation and instructed her to omit any mention of attending the clearance during a panel appearance: an action the lawyers say was part of a plan to justify punitive measures.

The firm also alleges that the extension came after Uguamaye openly criticized certain government policies, with the Lagos State Coordinator of the NYSC purportedly threatening her with service extension.
Inibehe Effiong Chambers describes the move as abuse of office, a violation of constitutional rights to free expression, and a denial of a fair hearing. They are demanding the immediate reversal of the two-month extension and issuance of Uguamaye’s NYSC discharge certificate without delay.
Failure to act, the letter warns, will prompt a formal appeal to the Presidency and potential legal action for damages against the NYSC and individuals involved.
The petition was also copied to the National Human Rights Commission and the Nigerian Bar Association.
The NYSC had initially published the reason why Ms. Rita was given an extension. According to them, she had missed the April clearance and is part of over 100 corp members whose service year have been extended; however, she denied missing the clearance.
