Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has reacted to the conviction of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, saying the matter should never have reached this point if the government had handled it with maturity and empathy.
In a statement shared on his X account, Obi said Kanu’s arrest, long detention, and eventual conviction reflect “a failure of leadership,” especially at a time when Nigerians are facing economic hardship and rising insecurity. According to him, the issues Kanu raised were genuine concerns that could have been addressed through dialogue, not force.

Obi insisted that meaningful engagement, listening, and reforms aimed at strengthening national unity would have been a better response. He warned that relying solely on strict legal measures, instead of exploring political solutions or negotiated peace, could further strain the country’s fragile stability.
He likened the government’s approach to “a man trapped in a hole who keeps digging deeper instead of finding a way out,” noting that such actions risk worsening the country’s divisions.
The former presidential candidate urged the Presidency, the Council of State, and respected national figures to step in and push for a lasting, peaceful settlement. Only justice, fairness and compassion, he said, can rebuild trust and foster unity.
Obi ended by encouraging Nigerians to remain hopeful, saying a united and progressive nation is still within reach—if grievances are addressed with sincerity and responsibility.
