A disturbing case of police extortion was uncovered in Bayelsa State, where officers attached to Zone 16 allegedly forced NYSC members traveling to Rivers State to part with ₦10 million.
Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu revealed that the incident occurred on September 17, 2024, along the East-West Road near Mbiama—a route now infamous for police harassment and unlawful money demands. The corps members were reportedly detained, threatened, and emotionally distressed before the officers collected the money through an account belonging to Nkem Alozie of Malvic.
Gwamnishu described the act as appalling, saying, “There was no complaint against the victims, no incriminating evidence found on them, and nobody signed their bail bond. This is not policing.”

Following his petition to the Inspector General of Police Complaint Response Unit on October 25, 2024, the extorted funds were successfully recovered on November 5, 2024. The victims have since made statements to the police, while the implicated officers are attached to the Surveillance Unit, AIG Zone 16 Bayelsa.
Gwamnishu warned that failure to sanction the officers would encourage further abuse of power.
The East-West Road has long been a source of fear for travelers, with reports of frequent extortion by security operatives. The recovery of the ₦10 million has reignited public outrage and calls for stronger accountability within the Nigerian Police Force.
