There was panic and sorrow in three communities in the Arondizuogu area of Ideato North Local Government Area, Imo State, after armed men launched a deadly attack on Thursday night, July 25.
The gunmen, reportedly in large numbers and riding on motorcycles, stormed Umualaoma, Ndi-Ejezie, and Ndiakuwata Uno around 10:00 p.m. They opened fire on residents, killing at least seven people on the spot and leaving many others seriously injured.
Eyewitnesses said the victims included shop owners, customers, and passersby. Graphic videos shared online showed bodies drenched in blood, lying motionless on the ground.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, described the attack as “barbaric and inhumane.” He added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, has deployed tactical units and intelligence teams to the affected areas to hunt down the attackers.
The police suspect the attack may have been carried out by members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, Eastern Security Network (ESN), though investigations are ongoing.
CP Danjuma, who led officers on a combing operation of the scene, assured residents that the situation is now under control. He promised that security has been tightened to prevent further violence and restore peace to the area.
He also expressed deep sympathy to the families of the victims, praying for the souls of the departed and the quick recovery of the wounded. He urged residents to stay calm and vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
