A Finnish court has sentenced pro-Biafran agitator Simon Ekpa to six years in prison after finding him guilty of terrorism-related crimes and other offenses.
The Päijät-Häme District Court in Lahti, on Monday, convicted the 40-year-old former municipal councillor on several charges, including involvement in a terrorist organization, incitement to commit crimes for terrorist purposes, aggravated tax fraud, and breaches of the Lawyers Act. He was ordered to remain in custody.
According to the court, Ekpa promoted the secession of Nigeria’s southeast through unlawful means between August 2021 and November 2024. Judges noted that he exploited divisions within a separatist movement to build influence, using social media to mobilize supporters.

Court documents revealed that armed groups tied to the movement were supplied with weapons, explosives, and ammunition through his contacts, and that he repeatedly urged his followers online to commit violent acts in Nigeria.
The trial, which spanned 12 sessions between May and June 2025, was decided unanimously by a panel of three judges. Finnish authorities first arrested Ekpa in December 2024 on suspicion of inciting terrorism and related offenses.
Although four other men were initially arrested alongside him, charges against them were later dropped due to lack of evidence.
Recall that Igbo TV had earlier published the arrest of Ekpa and four others by Finnish authorities over charges of terrorism financing and inciting unrest in the Southeastern part of Nigeria. As a controversial figure in the Biafran independence movement, he has long attracted criticism for his online broadcasts and inflammatory rhetoric. He denied all charges during the proceedings.
