Tragedy struck in Benin City on Thursday as the Edo State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Agun Gbenga, slumped and died during a public function.
Gbenga had just delivered a goodwill message at a programme organised by the International Association of World Peace Advocates at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre when he collapsed on his seat.
Efforts to revive him at the venue failed. He was rushed to the Military Hospital in Benin, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.

Eyewitnesses described the incident as shocking, noting that the commandant appeared healthy when he arrived. “He had just read his speech and was sitting down when he slumped. Medical personnel tried to resuscitate him, but it was too late,” said one attendee, Odion Ugbe.
NSCDC spokesperson, Afolabi Babawale, confirmed the death. “Yes, it is true that we lost the Edo State Commandant this afternoon. He slumped during a function,” he stated.
The sudden death has left colleagues, guests, and members of the public in shock, mourning the loss of a senior officer described as a gentleman dedicated to national service.
