A Pennsylvania man is recovering in the hospital after his dog accidentally discharged a shotgun and shot him in the back in what police have described as a freak accident.
According to the Shillington Police Department, officers received a distress call around 11:13 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11, reporting that a 53-year-old man had been shot. While en route, dispatchers informed officers that the victim’s dog had allegedly jumped onto a bed and triggered the firearm.

When police arrived, they found the man conscious and lying on the floor. He explained that he had been cleaning his shotgun and placed it on the bed before sitting down. Moments later, one of his dogs jumped onto the bed, causing the weapon to fire and strike him in the lower back.
Police confirmed that only the victim, his son, and their two other dogs were home at the time of the incident. The son was not in the room when the gun went off.

Paramedics rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, where he was taken into emergency surgery. Medical staff later informed investigators that he would require an additional operation.
Authorities say the shooting appears to be accidental, but a full investigation is ongoing to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the weapon’s discharge.
