A community in Akungba, Ondo State, was thrown into mourning on Saturday, September 20, after a young boy lost his life following accusations of stealing cocoa pods.
According to the Ondo State Police Command, the boy was brutally beaten before being taken to the station at about 2:30 p.m. in an unconscious state. Officers immediately directed that he be rushed to the hospital, but doctors confirmed him dead at 5:36 p.m.
Police said the complainant, identified as the farm owner, has been arrested, while the boy’s body has been deposited at the morgue for autopsy. The case has since been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Akure for further inquiry.

Describing the incident as tragic, Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, condemned the act of jungle justice and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.
“The public must desist from such acts. Any suspected crime should be reported to the police so that due process of the law can take its course,” he stated.
He extended condolences to the victim’s family, assuring that the matter would be investigated thoroughly and handled with fairness. The Command also urged residents to work closely with security agencies to promote peace and order in the state.
