The family of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner Josephine Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has announced the passing of her younger sister, Ruth Otabor, following complications from a road accident involving a Dangote truck.
In a statement issued on Sunday, August 31, 2025, by Eko Solicitors & Advocates on behalf of the Otabor family, Ruth was confirmed dead at about 6:30 a.m. The family described the loss as heartbreaking and appealed for privacy as they mourn their daughter, sister, and mother. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
Ruth, a fresh graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, had been battling for her life since August 13, 2025, when a Dangote truck ran into her near the institution.

The accident, which occurred barely six days after her graduation, left her with severe injuries and led to the amputation of one leg. Despite efforts by doctors, her condition worsened in the weeks that followed.
Her sister, Phyna, had earlier taken to social media to raise alarm over Ruth’s deteriorating health, calling on VDM for help, who responded instantly while accusing the Dangote Group of negligence. VeryDarkMan tried his best to popularize the issue, which led to the Edo state government offering to cater for her medical and treatment bills.
“Dangote is gambling with my sister’s life. If it were his own child, would he wait for endless paperwork before flying her out?” Phyna wrote in a post that drew widespread sympathy and outrage.
Ruth’s sudden passing has left her family, friends, and Phyna’s fanbase in deep grief. Messages of condolence have since poured in across social media, with many calling for justice over the tragedy.
