
A Nigerian Army officer, Lieutenant Samson Haruna, has died from severe burns after his wife allegedly set him ablaze during a domestic dispute at the Wellington Bassey Barracks in Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The tragic incident occurred on September 22, 2025, and was reported by counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama on Tuesday via X (formerly Twitter).
Sources revealed that the officer, a medical doctor serving as the Regimental Medical Officer with the 6 Battalion, had a heated quarrel with his wife, Mrs. Retyit Obadiah Dalong Haruna, who allegedly poured petrol on him and ignited it.

Lieutenant Haruna was first treated at the barracks’ medical unit before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The suspect has since been arrested and remains in custody as investigations continue.
Confirming the incident, the Nigerian Army’s 2 Brigade in Uyo condemned the act and expressed condolences to the family.
In a statement by Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lawal Muhammad, the Army described the incident as a “tragic case of domestic violence” and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace and respect within families.
“The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act and urges calm as the military police investigation continues,” the statement read.
