Authorities in Anambra State have shut down an illegal baby factory posing as a hospital in Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area.
The fake hospital, named “Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity,” was located near Tansian University at 1 School Road. After months of surveillance and undercover investigations, officials from the state Ministry of Health, with support from security operatives, stormed the premises over the weekend.
During the operation, five pregnant women and ten other individuals were arrested. The facility was discovered to be involved in human trafficking, operating under a falsified medical license. It was owned by a self-acclaimed doctor from Delta State.
Dr. Afam Obidike, the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, described the operation as a major breakthrough in the state’s fight against child trafficking and medical quackery.

He revealed that the victims, mostly girls aged between 15 and 21, were allegedly held against their will and impregnated. The babies were then sold off through illegal adoption channels.
“This so-called hospital was never a place of healing. It was a hub of exploitation, abuse, and serious violations of human rights,” Dr. Obidike said. “What we’ve uncovered is heartbreaking, but it strengthens our resolve to clean up the healthcare sector in Anambra.”
He also stressed that the government is actively shutting down unauthorized clinics and targeting fake medical practitioners through the State Health Facility Accreditation and Monitoring Unit and the Anti-Quackery Taskforce.
The Commissioner warned operators of illegal medical outfits to close shop or face arrest and prosecution. “Those involved in this criminal enterprise will face charges including child trafficking, unlawful detention, and exploitation,” he said.
Rescued victims, including teenage mothers and infants, are currently receiving medical attention and counselling.
Officials say investigations are ongoing, and more arrests may follow in the coming days.
