Tyler Robinson, 22, has been formally charged in Utah with the killing of activist Charlie Kirk, and prosecutors said Tuesday they will seek the death penalty.
Robinson faces seven counts, including aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child.
Authorities said Kirk was shot on September 10 during an event at Utah Valley University, allegedly from a rooftop about 200 yards away. Text messages recovered from Robinson indicated he had planned the attack, citing what he described as Kirk’s “hatred” as a motive.

Robinson made his first court appearance virtually on September 16, wearing a suicide-prevention smock, and spoke only to confirm his name as Judge Tony Graf read the charges. He was ordered held without bail.
Evidence in the case includes a note found under Robinson’s keyboard reading, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to take it,” as well as messages in which he instructed his roommate to delete incriminating texts.
Prosecutor Jeff Gray called Kirk’s death “an American tragedy” and said the severity of the crime supports seeking the death penalty.
