BREAKING: Abia Governor Alex Otti Raises Allowance of Corpers Serving in the State From ₦4,000 to ₦50,000

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has approved a major increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state—from ₦4,000 to as much as ₦50,000.

According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Njoku Ukoha, on Friday, all corps members in Abia will now receive a ₦20,000 base allowance. Those serving in state government establishments will get an additional ₦10,000, while medical and teaching corps members will earn an extra ₦30,000 monthly.

Ukoha said the move complements the Federal Government’s recently increased ₦77,000 NYSC allowance, describing it as part of Governor Otti’s broader reforms aimed at boosting youth empowerment and public service delivery in the state.

“This is the first major adjustment in 27 years and reflects Governor Otti’s commitment to making service in Abia both rewarding and impactful,” the statement read.

The governor’s office added that his administration has renovated the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bende, upgraded its roads and power supply, and improved other facilities; despite the camp being federal property.

Ukoha noted that about 35 per cent of Abia’s annual budget now goes to health and education—sectors he described as “pillars of human capital development.”

“With this increase,” the statement concluded, “Abia stands out among states that value the service of young Nigerians and are ready to invest in their future.”
