A 19-year-old, Miss Aaue Samuel Olubari of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has made history by winning a councillorship seat in Rivers State.
Her victory came during the Rivers Local Government elections held on Saturday, August 30, across 6,866 polling units in the state’s 319 wards. The polls produced new chairpersons and councillors to replace administrators appointed in April 2025, following the Supreme Court’s nullification of the October 2024 elections.
According to results announced by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), the APC secured victories in 20 out of 23 local government areas, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in Obio/Akpor, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, and Port Harcourt City.

Miss Olubari contested for the councillorship position of Bangha Ward 7 in Khana Local Government Area. Her candidacy had been introduced to stakeholders days before the election during ward-to-ward campaigns led by the APC Khana Chairman, Hon. Barile Ebenezer.
Her emergence is being hailed as a milestone for youth inclusion in politics and a sign that the “Not Too Young to Run” movement is gaining real traction at the grassroots level. The campaign, backed by a constitutional amendment signed into law in 2018, lowered the age requirements for various political offices, opening the door for younger Nigerians to participate more actively in governance.
Olubari’s success is now being celebrated by party members, supporters, and advocates of youth leadership as a step toward greater representation of young people in the country’s democratic process, while some still believe she is too young for such a political feat.
