At least four Nigerian troops were reported dead in a fatal attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants on the 27 Task Force Brigade headquarters in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The troops were caught off guard during the early morning Saturday attack as the terrorists ambushed the troops in a coordinated attack with explosives and heavy gunfire.

According to a surviving military source, the rebels overran parts of the base, burning some operational vehicles and capturing weapons and equipment.

“We were taken aback by the massive explosion and gunfire, but we stood firm,” the source said.

“Yes, we lost four of our men, just like they had casualties too.”

The attack is part of an increasing wave of militant attacks in Nigeria’s North-East. SaharaReporters had earlier reported an intense firefight between ISWAP militiamen and Nigerian troops in Buni Gari, a town in the same region.

The Nigerian Army publicized the fight on its verified Facebook page, reporting, “Troops of Operation HADIN KAI that are presently in a desperate battle against ISWAP attack at Buni Gari, Yobe State. Details later.”

The attack is only two weeks after another ISWAP attack on Buni Yadi, where three soldiers were killed and the town looted. Locals claim Saturday’s attack lasted about five hours, further raising concerns over the security situation in the troubled region.
