Bandits Demand N20m From Sokoto Community, Threaten Deadly Consequences
Residents of Bakale, a village in the Kilgori district of Yabo Local Government Area in Sokoto State, are reportedly under pressure from an armed group demanding a N20 million payment to halt further assaults on the community.
Gang Leader Issues New Directive
According to an audio clip obtained by a Daily Trust correspondent, the leader of the group instructed the village head to assemble his people and inform them of the latest demand.
He questioned the ruler about whether he had already met with the villagers and secured their cooperation. After the leader confirmed the message had been passed, the bandit issued fresh instructions, stating that the community must raise N20 million if they want to avoid further violence.
“Pay to Stay Safe,” Bandits Warn
The gang claimed the levy was a way for residents to “buy peace,” insisting that paying the amount would guarantee safety from attacks or kidnappings.
“We are not interested in harming you. That’s why we placed this levy. If you pay, we assure you of peace. No other group will disturb your community. But if you refuse, we will invade, kill, and abduct your people. That is our final warning,” the leader was heard saying.

A local leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that Bakale is not the only community targeted. Villages across Kilgori and Torankawa districts have reportedly faced similar threats in recent months.
Communities such as Bazar, Alkalije, Gari, Dagel, Bakale, Adarawa, Kwaidaza, Kilgori Runji, Tudu, Tile, Kibiyare, Barmadu, and others have all been issued varying levies.
Payments Range From N3m to N20m
The source explained that the amount demanded from each community differs, depending on population and size. Current levies imposed by the armed groups range from N3 million to N20 million.
