As a Student I was Driving Mercedes Benz; My Father was the General Manager of Many Companies — FCT Minister Wike

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has responded to his predecessor, former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, questioning his source of wealth by asserting that he was born into a well-to-do family and did not rely on public office to afford luxury.

“As a student, I was driving a Mercedes-Benz. My father was the general manager of many companies,” Wike said during an interview on Channels Television, stressing that he comes from a privileged background and not the same as Rotimi Amaechi.

Wike made these remarks while defending his ownership of a Rolls-Royce, which attracted public scrutiny after Amaechi questioned how he could afford such a vehicle.

“I have a Rolls-Royce, so what? Nobody gave it to me—I bought it myself,” Wike said, insisting that his wealth was not tied to corruption or abuse of office.

He accused Amaechi of hypocrisy, claiming the former governor also lives a life of luxury but pretends otherwise. “You can’t say you are poor and still own mansions in GRA and Guzape, Abuja,” Wike said. “Someone said I was given a Rolls-Royce by a contractor. That’s what he [Amaechi] did, not me.”

Wike went ahead to accuse Amaechi of corruption, saying that his wife, Judith Amaechi, receives N4 billion every month to train Niger Delta women. He pleaded with President Bola Tinubu to release the forensic reports of the NDDC, saying that if what he said is not in the records, he would resign as a minister.

Wike also dismissed allegations of corruption, stating that no court has convicted him. “Yes, I like money—everyone needs money for school fees, healthcare, family needs—but that doesn’t make me corrupt.”
