Just 48 hours after President Bola Tinubu visited Benue State to address the state’s rising insecurity, suspected armed herdsmen launched a fresh attack on Wannune, a community in Tarka Local Government Area.
According to reports by SaharaReporters, the attackers stormed the community on Friday, burning houses and other properties. Many people fled into nearby bushes to escape the violence.
A National Youth Corps member serving in the area said, “Everyone is running into the bushes for safety. Please let Nigerians pray for us. The herdsmen are ravaging the environment now.”
The incident has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of President Tinubu’s visit and whether any real steps have been taken to stop the killings.

During his visit to Benue earlier in the week, Tinubu met with key stakeholders and ordered the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff to arrest those behind the killings. Tinubu’s visit was due to the mass killing in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area, where around 200 people were reportedly killed by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen.
The killings in Yelewata sparked nationwide outrage, with many blaming the federal government for failing to protect lives and property, while many threw spite at the state governor, Hyacinth Alia.
Reacting to Tinubu’s visit, a media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar criticized the trip, describing it as more of a political show than a genuine effort to end the violence.
The attack on Wannune is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Benue, a state that has suffered repeated assaults by suspected herdsmen. Details about casualties have not been stated.
Residents and civil society groups continue to call for concrete action from the government to stop the killings and ensure peace.
