Anambra Governorship Election: EFCC Arrests Three Suspected Vote Buyers

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested three suspected vote buyers during the Anambra governorship election held on Saturday, November 8, 2025.

The suspects (identified as Emeka Ilokasia, apprehended at Ward 2, Njikoka Local Government Area; Nwachukwu Loretta, arrested at Ward 2 (008), Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government; and Emuka Chuwudi, caught at Umunachi Village, Dunukofia Local Government) were reportedly engaged in vote-buying activities before being intercepted by EFCC officials.

According to the anti-graft agency, the suspects are currently under investigation and will be charged to court once inquiries are concluded.

The arrests came as election observers and civil groups expressed concerns over the persistence of vote-buying in Nigerian elections. Despite acknowledging that the Anambra poll was largely peaceful and better organised than previous ones, monitors under the Anambra Election Observation Hub noted cases of voter inducement, missing result sheets, and underage voting across several polling units.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) disclosed that over 95 per cent of results from the election had been uploaded to its Result Viewing Portal (IReV), showing significant improvement in electronic transmission compared to past elections.

INEC further assured that the uploaded results remained secure and verifiable, reaffirming its commitment to conducting a credible and transparent process.
