Stan Alieke, the legal counsel of Nigerian musician Darlington Okorie popularly referred to as Speed Darlington and Akpi has lambasted the Nigerian justice system and the police for keeping his client in prison for weeks without bail just because he allegedly insulted an influential person (Burna Boy).
The lawyer posted on his Instagram story to reveal the condition of Akpi’s cell who is reportedly locked underground in a SARS detention facility known as “abattoir” among hardened criminals, and Boko haram.
“I was asking Akpi about the condition of his cell, and he told me that he’s being kept underground; he’s detained in the SARS detention facility, the infamous “abattoir”. Anyone conversant with Abuja will know how dreaded that place is; that’s where Boko haram and hardened criminals are kept; that’s the same place Akpi is kept, and over what? Just because he allegedly insulted an influential person,” the legal counsel wrote.

Lawyer Stan Alieke decried the treatment the Nigerian police have given to his client, stating that “there is nowhere it is justifiable for Akpi to have been detained for over 20 days over a civil dispute and the police are refusing to grant him bail, despite the court processes filed with them..”
Recall that Igbo Tv had reported on November 27 of the rearrest of Speed Darlington in Owerri, Imo State where he went to perform, for allegedly defaming Nigerian music star, Burna Boy.
The lawyer pointed out that things like this can only happen in a lawless society, using Nigeria as a case study, where the rich exert their influence and might over the poor.
He slammed Burna Boy who claims to be a freedom fighter in his songs, but being the one sing his influence to oppress another person.
The lawyer also stated that the police are using the slow justice administration to keep Akpi arbitrarily in detention. “How can someone who has been detained for weeks wait till Jan 15th, 2025, for his arraignment before lawyers can move for his bail in court?” Stan Alieke asks.
He cited instances that testify against the criminal justice system of Nigeria where suspects have been detained for months before arraignment.
“I have been a lawyer for a while to know that police brutality is not going away anytime soon so I take sole in the fact that it can be anybody,” Akpi’s lawyer wrote.
