Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned recent threats issued against Peter Obi by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, describing them as a danger to all members of the opposition coalition.
Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Obi, who ran under the Labour Party, are both part of a new political alliance formed to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of 2027.
Governor Okpebholo had warned that Peter Obi should not enter Edo State without prior notification or security clearance, claiming Obi’s recent visit led to unrest and fatalities.

The governor’s remarks triggered backlash, including from Atiku, who tweeted, “Let it be known that a threat against Peter Obi or any of us is a threat against ALL of us!”
Legal responses also followed swiftly. Human rights law firm Festus Ogun Legal (FOLEGAL) issued a seven-day ultimatum to Governor Okpebholo, demanding a retraction and public apology.
In a letter dated July 21, the firm described the governor’s statement as unconstitutional, citing Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees every Nigerian the right to move freely and reside anywhere in the country.
The letter further referenced a Court of Appeal ruling in Faith Okafor v. Lagos State Government (2016), which established that no governor can restrict a citizen’s movement without legal basis.
Describing the governor’s stance as “preposterous,” the firm warned that failure to withdraw the threat could lead to legal action in defense of Nigeria’s constitutional democracy and rule of law.
