At least four people lost their lives on Thursday night after gunmen opened fire during a burial ceremony at Ezi Village in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. About 15 others were also injured in the attack.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants, suspected to be cultists, arrived on motorcycles and shot at mourners before fleeing. Residents described the scene as chaotic, with people running in different directions to escape the gunfire.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday. He said operatives from the Ogidi Division responded quickly, restored order, and evacuated victims to nearby hospitals.

Sixteen spent cartridges were recovered, and preliminary findings point to a clash between rival cult groups.
Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the killings and promised a thorough investigation.
He assured residents that the command remains committed to tackling cult violence and urged them to remain calm and report suspicious activities.
The attack adds to growing concerns over rising cult-related violence at social gatherings across the state.
