BREAKING: FG Cancels 5% Tax on Calls and Data, Offers Relief to Nigerians

The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the 5% excise duty on telecommunications services, covering both voice calls and data subscriptions.

The decision, disclosed on Thursday by the National Orientation Agency, followed President Bola Tinubu’s directive during deliberations on the newly passed Finance Act.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, said the move was aimed at easing the financial pressure on Nigerians and encouraging growth in the country’s digital economy.

“This development will provide relief to more than 171 million active telecom users who have already been grappling with higher tariffs this year,” Maida stated.

The tax was first introduced in 2022 under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration as part of efforts to boost government revenue.

It was widely criticized by telecom operators, consumer rights groups, and the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), who argued that it would worsen the burden on citizens and hinder investment in the sector.

With Tinubu’s intervention, stakeholders say the policy reversal is a welcome step toward reducing costs for consumers and strengthening Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.
