Journalist Hassan Mai-Waya Kangiwa has been detained in Kebbi State after uploading a video exposing severe neglect at Kangiwa General Hospital. The footage showed an elderly patient on a bare metal bed frame without a mattress, receiving treatment, triggering widespread public outrage.
The hospital, from the footage, looked very dilapidated and empty.
Kangiwa was reportedly arrested under orders from Governor Nasir Idris shortly after the video circulated. Observers are criticizing the state government, saying that instead of responding to the hospital deficiencies, authorities targeted the messenger.
Civil society groups, human rights advocates, and opposition parties have joined calls for his immediate release.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a statement, described the arrest as an assault on press freedom and demanded that Governor Idris address both Kangiwa’s detention and the problems uncovered at the hospital.
Media freedom groups also warn that this arrest could chill journalism in Kebbi and beyond, signaling danger for transparency. Many note the importance of accountability at public hospitals and insist that exposing neglect should not lead to repression.
As of the latest reports, neither Kebbi State authorities nor the police have provided full details of charges against Kangiwa, and his current status remains under investigation.
The video and later events have sparked fresh debates about funding for health sectors, healthcare infrastructure, and the rights of journalists to hold governments accountable.
