Millions of Nigerians will join skywatchers across Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia tonight in witnessing a rare celestial spectacle—a total lunar eclipse, popularly known as a “blood moon.”
The eclipse, expected to last about 83 minutes, will begin across Nigeria around 8:00 p.m. West Africa Time, with the peak occurring at approximately 10:11 p.m. During this period, the moon will slip fully into Earth’s shadow, glowing in shades of red and orange as sunlight bends through the planet’s atmosphere.
According to scientists, the event will be visible across most of Africa, including Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Benin, Togo, Niger, Chad, and São Tomé and Príncipe.

While parts of Europe and Asia will catch the moon already in eclipse as it rises, the Americas will miss out this time. Altogether, more than 7 billion people worldwide are within range of at least part of the spectacle.
Unlike solar eclipses, this event poses no risk to the eyes and can be safely enjoyed without special equipment, though binoculars or a camera may enhance the view. Experts advise stargazers in Nigeria’s remote regions, such as Yobe and Borno, to expect the clearest views thanks to minimal light pollution.
The lunar eclipse, occurring just days before the moon’s closest approach to Earth, promises a particularly vivid display. Scientists say it is not only a breathtaking natural event but also a reminder of Earth’s connection to the wider cosmos.
