The governor of Sokoto State, Ahmad Aliyu, has announced a fully sponsored Hajj trip to Saudi Arabia for the best graduating student of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS).

The recipient, Abdullah Sheriff, a Microbiology graduate, emerged as the overall best student for the 2023/2024 academic session with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.92. Sheriff was among 119 first-class graduates out of 3,561 students conferred with degrees during the convocation ceremony on Saturday.

While the governor’s gesture drew applause from some, it also sparked debate among students and the public. Supporters hailed it as a commendable recognition of academic achievement. However, critics questioned the relevance of a religious reward to scholarly excellence, suggesting that monetary grants, scholarships, or career opportunities might better serve the graduate’s future.

Comments on UDUS-based media platforms reflected the divide. Some praised the governor for celebrating academic success, while others argued that more practical incentives would better empower graduates in a challenging job market.

The development has opened a wider conversation on how best to reward outstanding students in Nigerian universities—whether through symbolic gestures or tangible support that aids long-term career and personal growth.
