Governor Hope Uzodimma has approved a new minimum wage of N104,000 for civil servants in Imo State, raising it from N76,000.
The announcement came after a late-night meeting with labour leaders on Tuesday at the Government House, Owerri. Alongside the adjustment for civil servants, the governor also approved new wage scales for professionals, with doctors’ salaries rising from N215,000 to N503,000, and lecturers in tertiary institutions moving from N119,000 to N222,000.
Uzodimma said the decision was influenced by the economic hardship faced by workers following subsidy removal and rising living costs. He stressed that improving workers’ welfare was a key investment in boosting productivity and sustaining the local economy.
“When workers are well paid, families are happier, and the economy grows stronger,” the governor said.

He highlighted that the state’s internally generated revenue had risen from N400 million to over N3 billion monthly, while federal allocations had increased significantly since 2020. He also noted that Imo’s debt profile had dropped from N280 billion to less than N100 billion under his watch.
The governor further promised that the state would clear the last batch of gratuities owed to pensioners, amounting to N16 billion, starting August 27. He also pointed to ongoing reforms in health, infrastructure, and youth empowerment programs as part of his administration’s broader development agenda.
Reacting, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Uchechigemezu Nwigwe, described the wage increase as “a victory for workers” and implored other state governors to do the same, while the Trade Union Congress (TUC) praised Uzodimma’s political will.
With the adjustment, Imo now ranks among states offering the highest minimum wage in Nigeria.
