A police officer has been confirmed dead following a violent clash between operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) at a mining site in Amaeze, Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, was confirmed by the council chairman of Ivo LGA, Emmanuel Ajah, who said he was briefed by the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area.
According to him, the confrontation between the two security agencies turned tragic when a police operative lost his life.
Police spokesperson in Ebonyi, Superintendent Joshua Ukandu, explained in a statement that a police team had gone to the quarry to arrest suspects linked to a petition.

He noted that the suspects willingly submitted to the police after officers properly identified themselves in the presence of both soldiers and NSCDC personnel stationed at the site.
While the soldiers allowed the process to continue without objection, Ukandu alleged that the NSCDC team leader ordered his men to block the police vehicle, insisting the suspects would not be taken away.
Despite the suspects themselves agreeing to go with the police, the NSCDC officers reportedly resisted. Matters escalated when one NSCDC operative allegedly attempted to seize a rifle from a policeman. In the struggle, the gun discharged, fatally injuring a police officer.
The victim was rushed to the hospital but later confirmed dead. The NSCDC officer involved has since been arrested, while investigations are ongoing.
Ukandu stressed that “no individual has the authority to obstruct the Nigeria Police Force in the lawful discharge of its constitutional duties.”
The identities of the deceased officer and the arrested NSCDC operative have not yet been released.
