A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced Baltasar Ebang Engonga (a former senior government official) to eight years in prison for embezzlement, along with a $220,000 fine, the Supreme Court’s press director confirmed.
Engonga, once head of the National Financial Investigation Agency, was found guilty of redirecting public funds meant for official travel into his personal account. He stood accused alongside five other senior officials of misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars.
His conviction follows a shocking scandal in late 2024, when over 400 explicit sex tapes featuring Engonga and married women (including relatives of high-ranking officials) surfaced online.

The videos, some reportedly filmed in his government office, triggered a wave of public outrage and widespread mockery. Authorities responded by ordering stricter conduct in government offices and enhanced security monitoring.
However, Engonga’s legal troubles may not end with the eight-year sentence. In July, prosecutors sought a much harsher combined 18-year sentence (eight years for embezzlement, four and a half for illicit enrichment, and six years for abuse of office) along with a fine of approximately $1.5 million (910 million CFA francs) and a lifetime ban from public office.
The trial and conviction are being seen as part of the government’s broader, though selective, corruption crackdown, yet critics remain wary of whether the country’s elite, to which Engonga belongs, will be held equally accountable.
