The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has resolved to zone its presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The decision was announced on Monday after the party’s 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja. Addressing journalists, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba said the move followed recommendations from the zoning committee chaired by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri.
Ologunagba explained that while the National Chairman remains zoned to the North, the presidential ticket will now go to the South. He added that the NEC also agreed to retain the current National Working Committee (NWC) zoning structure for the party’s elective convention scheduled for November.

“NEC recommended that the North and South should retain their current NWC positions. Since the National Chairman is zoned to the North, the PDP 2027 presidential ticket is hereby zoned to the South,” he said.
The development comes just days after PDP governors held a closed-door meeting in Gusau, Zamfara State. Although details of that gathering were not made public, it was believed to have focused on internal party strategies and preparations for the 2027 elections.
The PDP, which has been out of power at the federal level since 2015, is under increasing pressure to unite its ranks and present a strong challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Party leaders say the zoning decision is part of efforts to strengthen internal cohesion as the countdown to the next general election begins.
