A gruesome crime has shaken Hyderabad after police arrested a 27-year-old man for killing his five-month-pregnant wife, dismembering her body, and disposing of the parts in the Musi River.
The accused, identified as Samala Mahender Reddy, a cab driver from Vikarabad now living in Boduppal, married 23-year-old B. Swathi in January 2024 despite opposition from their families. Their inter-caste marriage, once born of love, quickly turned turbulent. Frequent quarrels, allegations of dowry harassment, and family disapproval cast a shadow over their relationship.
In April 2024, Swathi filed a dowry harassment case against Mahender under Section 498A of the IPC and the Dowry Prohibition Act. Though village elders brokered a compromise, peace was short-lived. Swathi often returned to her parents’ home but would eventually reconcile with Mahender.

According to Malkajgiri DCP P.V. Padmaja, Mahender had carefully planned the murder. He bought a hacksaw and kept it hidden until the opportunity arose. On Saturday, after returning home in the afternoon, he strangled Swathi following another heated quarrel. Later that evening, he sent a misleading message from her phone to her mother, pretending all was well.
Police say Mahender then cut her body into pieces and made three trips over several hours to dump the remains in the Musi river near Prathapsingaram. Only her torso was recovered from the house; the rest could not be retrieved due to strong currents and deep waters.
Mahender initially tried to cover up the crime by telling relatives that Swathi was missing. But his behavior raised suspicion. Relatives persuaded him to approach the police, who noticed inconsistencies in his account. Under questioning, he confessed.
Investigators revealed that Swathi had previously undergone an abortion but conceived again in March this year. Their quarrels persisted, and on Friday she told Mahender she would visit her parents for a medical check-up later this month. The argument that followed, laced with verbal abuse, reportedly triggered the fatal attack.
Police suspect deeper motives, pointing out Mahender’s controlling behavior—he had earlier forced Swathi to quit her call center job out of jealousy. The investigation is ongoing.
