Senior Pastor of House on the Rock Church, Paul Adefarasin, has stirred fresh debate after declaring that Nigeria’s creation was not ordained by God but engineered by British colonial powers to serve their economic interests.

Speaking during a Sunday sermon, Adefarasin dismissed the notion that the country’s foundation was divinely inspired, insisting it was shaped by foreign deals and conquests. He referenced historical accounts, including The Martyrdom of Man, to argue that colonial empires negotiated territories in Africa for their own benefit long before Nigeria emerged as a nation.

“Nigeria, I do not believe it was created by God,” he said. “It was a project of colonial agreements and power struggles. The church must recognize its responsibility to correct what man got wrong, because we are the light of the world and the salt of the earth.”

The cleric also questioned the legitimacy of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, claiming it was imposed by military rulers rather than written by “we the people.” Quoting Psalm 11:3, he likened Nigeria’s situation to a structure built on a faulty foundation, arguing that no nation can thrive on such a shaky base.

Adefarasin further criticized widespread corruption and poor governance, using substandard road construction as an example of systemic failure. “Why do they build roads that collapse so quickly? Some say it’s because contractors want the same jobs again next year. That shows a lack of justice and equity,” he lamented.

He went on to challenge the popular reverence for Nigeria’s nationalist leaders, including Obafemi Awolowo, Tafawa Balewa, Ahmadu Bello, and Nnamdi Azikiwe. According to him, they were not the true “founding fathers,” as the country’s name and structure were largely determined by British officials such as Lord Lugard and his associates.

“This nation was crafted for the business of the British purse,” Adefarasin concluded, stressing that Nigeria’s destiny can only be secured by rebuilding on a just and legitimate foundation.
