Russia has issued a stern warning to the United States and its Western allies following Ukraine’s surprise attack on the Kursk region, cautioning that any slide toward a Third World War would not remain confined to Europe.
The warning comes after Ukraine launched an assault on Russia’s western Kursk region on August 6, marking the largest foreign attack on Russian territory since World War II. President Vladimir Putin vowed that Moscow would deliver a “worthy response” to the incursion.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, addressing reporters in Moscow on Tuesday, accused the West of recklessly escalating the conflict by weighing Ukraine’s requests to use Western-supplied weapons for strikes deep inside Russia.
“They are like small children playing with matches,” Lavrov said. “This is very dangerous when grown-ups, entrusted with nuclear weapons in Western countries, start playing with fire.”

Lavrov dismissed the notion that a global war would affect Europe alone, saying Americans should not assume they would be spared from the fallout of a larger conflict.
Russia’s Nuclear Posture
Russia’s nuclear doctrine, updated in 2020, allows for the use of nuclear weapons in response to an attack involving weapons of mass destruction or if conventional attacks threaten the very existence of the state. Lavrov noted that Moscow is “clarifying” its stance in light of recent developments.
Kyiv Pushes Back
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier this month that the Kursk operation proved Russia’s threats of retaliation were empty. He argued that Ukraine remains limited by restrictions imposed by its allies and urged the West to be bolder in providing military support.
Kyiv has confirmed using U.S.-supplied HIMARS missiles to strike bridges in the Kursk region. Russia, meanwhile, claims Western weapons, including British tanks and American rocket systems, were deployed in the attack.
US, UK Involvement Questioned
Washington insists it had no prior knowledge of Ukraine’s plans and denies direct involvement in the operation. However, Russian officials have dismissed such claims. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov described U.S. involvement as “an obvious fact,” while foreign intelligence chief Sergei Naryshkin said Moscow does not believe Western denials.
The New York Times reported that both the U.S. and Britain provided Ukraine with satellite imagery and intelligence about the Kursk region in the days following the attack, helping Kyiv monitor Russian reinforcements.
As tensions mount, Moscow continues to frame the West’s actions as a dangerous provocation, warning that missteps could drag the world closer to a catastrophic confrontation.
