Former U.S. President Donald Trump raised eyebrows on Tuesday after making unusual remarks about his chances of “going to heaven” while discussing his push to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Speaking on Fox & Friends a day after hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders at the White House, Trump defended his outreach to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He admitted he had phoned Putin after the summit but said he avoided doing so in front of European leaders to avoid “disrespecting” the Russian leader.

In the middle of his explanation, Trump veered off, saying: “If I can save 7,000 people a week from being killed, I think that’s pretty good. I want to try and get to heaven if possible. I’m hearing I’m not doing too well—I’m really at the bottom of the totem pole. But if I can get to heaven, this will be one of the reasons.”

The former president went on to credit himself with preventing wars elsewhere, including between India and Pakistan earlier this year and in the Iran-Israel standoff in June. He claimed those interventions saved countless lives and should count toward his legacy.

Trump, who often insists he could end the Ukraine war in 24 hours, also repeated his long-standing frustration at not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, accusing world leaders of denying him recognition.

The remarks come as his peace efforts with Putin remain stalled, despite multiple high-profile meetings.
