BREAKING: NCAA Orders Passengers to Switch Off Phones, Scraps Airplane Mode During Flights

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has directed that passengers must now switch off their mobile phones completely during takeoff and landing, ruling out the option of using airplane mode.

Michael Achimugu, the NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, announced the new rule on Tuesday in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He explained that the authority has streamlined regulations on the use of electronic devices on flights across Nigeria.

“During the critical phases of flight—takeoff and landing—all phones must be switched off,” Achimugu said. He added that airlines are expected to immediately update their security programmes to align with this requirement if they have not already done so.

He noted that airplane mode will remain suspended until the authority reviews the guideline in line with future technological advancements.

The directive follows an emergency meeting with aviation stakeholders, which came after a recent air rage incident involving a passenger, Comfort Emmanson, accused of unruly behavior aboard an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos.

With this new measure, the NCAA says it hopes to ensure safer operations and minimize distractions during critical moments of flight.
