A much-anticipated summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin wrapped up in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15 without any agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
Putin arrived amid warm fanfare (greeted with a red carpet and handshake by Trump), a welcome not seen since the 2022 invasion. In their nearly three-hour discussion, both leaders described making “great progress” and reaching an “understanding,” though no specifics were offered during the curt press briefing.
President Trump later shifted his stance, suggesting peace negotiations should move directly toward a full peace agreement rather than a traditional ceasefire, a departure from the U.S. and European posture.

He emphasized that the next steps now rest with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders. Zelenskyy responded positively, pledging readiness for cooperation and planning to meet with Trump in Washington soon.
