The Obafemi Awolowo University community has been thrown into mourning following the death of a dental student who reportedly took his own life shortly after checking his examination results.
The Ife University Dental Students’ Association (IFUDSA) confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its president, Adebayo Idris, describing it as a heartbreaking loss.
“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues in the Faculty of Dentistry. We have received the painful news that he took his own life shortly after the release of examination results,” Idris said.

He noted that the tragedy highlights the silent struggles many students face and called for increased awareness and support for mental health.
“This loss is not just the departure of a promising young mind but a painful reminder of the silent battles many students face. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and all who knew him,” he added.
Idris urged students to support one another and seek professional help when needed, stressing that mental health is just as important as physical health.
He also reaffirmed the association’s commitment to improving student welfare and mental health resources to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
