Ibom Air: "Ms. Emmanson never at any time refused to switch off her phone for take-off" — Eyewitness Speaks on Ibom Air Flight Dispute

Chaos erupted at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed Airport on Sunday when a passenger, identified as Comfort Emmanson, assaulted multiple Ibom Air crew members and airport security personnel after refusing to comply with flight safety rules.

The incident, caught on video and widely shared online, began on the airline’s Uyo–Lagos flight. According to Ibom Air, Emmanson was asked to switch off her phone before takeoff but refused. It took intervention from a fellow passenger to turn off the device, prompting a verbal tirade from her. The situation was calmed, and the flight proceeded as scheduled.

However, upon landing in Lagos, Emmanson reportedly waited until other passengers had disembarked before attacking the Purser who had instructed her earlier. She allegedly stepped on the crew member, tore off her wig and glasses, hurled them to the floor, and struck her repeatedly. When another attendant tried to intervene, she was slapped as well.

The airline said Emmanson also attempted to remove a fire extinguisher to use as a weapon—an act that could have caused serious damage to the aircraft. Even after security arrived, she continued to lash out, assaulting Ibom Air and Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) staff, including the ground supervisor.

Michael Achimugu, spokesperson for the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), condemned the attack, urging passengers to respect safety procedures such as switching off devices before takeoff and landing.

Ibom Air has now banned Emmanson from all future flights and confirmed she was handed over to the Nigeria Police for further investigation. The airline has also reported the matter to the NCAA.

This latest disruption comes just days after Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde, known as K1 De Ultimate, was banned for six months by the NCAA over unruly conduct at Abuja’s domestic terminal.
