Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi says Nigeria’s corruption problem isn’t as complicated as people think, and the solution starts at the top.
Speaking to students at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, on Friday, Obi declared:
“If you, your wife, and your children are not stealing, you have reduced corruption by 60 percent.”
The former Anambra State governor said leadership by example is the most powerful anti-corruption strategy.

He backed his point with personal records, claiming that as chairman of a bank, he never took loans from the institution, and as governor, he left office without diverting a single kobo of public funds.
“I left nothing missing. Go and show me where any money of Anambra State, which I wasn’t entitled to, was linked to me,” he challenged.
Obi stressed that discipline, transparency, and personal integrity must guide leaders who want to fight corruption effectively.
Looking ahead to 2027, he repeated his vow to serve only one term if elected president.
“If I become president, I will serve for just four years. It can be less, but never more. Four years is enough to start good governance and bring civility into the system,” he said.
